  • I just finished watching “Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children.” I guess I expected something too specific, so I was a little disappointed by the movie–but it is rather satisfying if you’re a fan of Final Fantasy 7 who, like me, felt shafted by the game’s ending.

Good stuff: animation was excellent. The characters looked, well, pretty freaking fantastic.

    Oh Aeris…Aeris…you’re still my favorite!

Bad stuff: storyline dragged on too much, and male characters looked too much like women. One could say that’s typical of Japanese anime, but these guys were too feminine even by anime standards.

Watch it anyway. There are sites where you can download it for free…and unfortunately I don’t think it’s worth buying.

  • hater… i liked it alot. It was kinda slow in the beginning but eventually it picked up. Stop sterotyping Sylvia… Just cause a guy has long hair doesnt mean he is gay >.<

  • I’m debating whether to watch it before or after my exams… >_> … I wish they made an FF8 movie- by FAR the best of all the FFs!! Although FF7 fans tend to disagree…

  • Sigh… You’d think I enjoy arguing FF8 was best eh? But then after posting on bazillions of forums over the last 5 years about the superiority of FF8, it tends to get repetitive. In short though, FF8 offers a semi-realistic experience which can connect with the people playing. Yes I know the title is Final Fantasy and it’s supposed to be imaginary, but with an intriguing storyline and human-like characters, it offered a good blend of fantasy and reality. Then, the graphics and CGs were amazing for the time. The realistic human face of Rinoa (which no doubt attracted many more males to the FF series) was gorgeous and urged players to continue playing to see what happens to this beautiful girl- (and let’s not forget the supposed “sexiness” of Squall; although I personally never found him that attractive). The characterisation was top notch, unlike the new FF’s where the characters seem to have very boring personalities and there’s always one extrovert who’s stupid and impulsive… FF8 had a mix between the introverted (Squall), the optimistic (Rinoa), the “harm sup” (Irvine) – not sure if you know what that means, the gym-junkie (Zell), etc.. It made it believable. There was always a character which could connect with the audience. FF8 is also the only FF I believe to have a truly polysemic nature- I played it first when I was in yr7 (some 5 years ago) and I found it amazing then; although I didn’t really understand the ideas of time compression or half the plot to be honest (as in the whole way that Laguna links everyone together), but then upon replaying it recently (I’m 18 now!) it meant a whole lot more to me as I understood much more of the plot- if you want, you can read the plot summary (on GameFAQs.com)- it’s not perfect, but it’s pretty good at finding stuff alot of us missed. Finally, Triple Triad was the best minigame I have ever played- it required a bit of thinking and was as addictive as real life card collecting… as for GF summons, Draw, the collectable merchandise spinoffs (Griever ring), etc.. I’ll save that for my next post.

    … I await your response =] … I”m off to school now~ Bye!

  • Did you play FF8 on PC or PSX? We mustn’t forget the Chocobo’s World.. which was pretty cool. You played Chocobo Racing? Did you like it? For some reason… I couldn’t help but think it was a tacky attempt to get into the then-popular go-kart market after Crash-Team Racing, Mario Kart, South Park Racing, etc.. had all tapped into.

To be honest, FF8 is the only FF game I’ve ever played completely from start to finish and tried as much as a normal-human (not those FF-freaks!) can complete without resorting to following strategy guides the whole way… I really liked the easy-to-understand junctioning system and draw system. Much easier to understand than any other FF I think. Moogles have always played an important role in FF games providing subtle hints towards the storyline or they become more involved…

What other games do you play/used to play?

  • Btw ‘harm sup’ is the cantonese word for like… Horny people? I think that’s the closest English word… but it’s used in a more comical sense I think.

  • haha sorry sylvia… im a Tifa man myself… But honestly you thought Aeris was going to come back to life? I dunno, I think that would make the whole epic point of her death in the game somewhat unmeaningful.

  • VII and VIII were the only ones I completed. I got all the sidequests and weapons for VII but never could get the last limit breaks for a some characters (Aeris was almost impossible for me since she dies so early *weep* (T_T)). Man I was so pissed that when I finally fought sephiroth, I kept reloading the game until I can use Cloud’s Omnislash to deal the final blow (took a couple of times too).

VIII was not too bad and I completed everything possible … I even managed to pull off Squall’s Lionheart, Rinoa’s Wishing Star and Zell’s My Final Heaven in sequence when the final boss form just appeared (I was saving all their limit breaks and I got lucky with Rinoa’s random limit selection).

The movie was alright … one comment I heard was that it’s like an extended FMV of a game except you don’t get play the characters. My hands kept twitching when Cloud did that 7-8 sword strike limit break at the end.

  • I just recently bought it on DVD. I like it. It wasn’t great but it wasn’t horrible either.
